The essential importance of nutrition before and after surgery

A balanced diet, rich in essential micro and macronutrients, plays a key role in the healing process after aesthetic procedures. It is advisable to eat a nutrient-rich diet several weeks before the planned treatment in order to optimally prepare the body. After the operation, a balanced diet is still essential to support the healing process and minimise potential complications.

The components of a healthy diet in the context of aesthetic procedures

A healthy, balanced supply of all important micro and macronutrients is essential to strengthen the patient's immune system and support the healing process.

Micronutrients

Micronutrients include vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other vital substances that are needed in smaller quantities but play a crucial role in the healing process and overall health. Essential micronutrients include:

Vitamins

  • Vitamin A: Essential for rebuilding skin and mucous membranes, supports wound healing. Found in carrots, sweet potatoes and kale, for example.
  • Vitamin C: Promotes collagen production, skin regeneration and strengthens the immune system of patients, improves iron absorption. Contained in peppers, kiwi and citrus fruits, for example.
  • Vitamin E: Strengthens the immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Minerals

  • Zinc: Supports wound closure, stabilises cell membranes and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Can be obtained, for example, from beef or wholemeal products as well as seeds and kernels (sesame, pumpkin seeds).
  • Iron: Promotes the transport of oxygen to the wound tissue, supports the formation of healthy scar tissue. Found, for example, in meat, green vegetables, pulses, chickpeas and red berries.

Omega-3 fatty acids

  • Help to reduce inflammation and promote blood circulation, which is essential for efficient healing. Found, for example, in salmon and linseed.
  • It is crucial for patients to aim for a balanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids and to minimise the consumption of saturated fats and trans fats, which can be found in processed foods and fried foods.

Macronutrients

Macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats, which are needed in larger quantities and are the body's main source of energy. Important macronutrients are:

Carbohydrates

  • Provide the body with energy, reduce the breakdown of the body's own protein and stabilise energy levels. Found in potatoes, rice and wholesome pasta.

Proteins

  • Important for tissue repair, the development of body and defence cells, as well as for the synthesis of enzymes and hormones. Proteins also help to stabilise energy levels. They can be found in pulses or lean meat, for example.

Fats

  • Unsaturated fatty acids, such as those found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and oily fish (e.g. salmon, mackerel and sardines), are particularly recommended.

Drink plenty and avoid harmful substances

In the context of a cosmetic procedure, well-known nutritional guidelines become even more important for patients. Adequate fluid intake, preferably by drinking still water or unsweetened teas, is crucial to optimally prepare the body for surgery and support the healing process. In addition, the consumption of sugary foods and drinks, refined carbohydrates, high-fat meals and excessive salt and alcohol should be minimised. Industrially processed foods should also be reduced as much as possible. These often contain high amounts of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, which can impair the healing process and promote inflammation in the body. Instead, the focus should be on fresh foods and home-cooked meals to provide the body with all the necessary nutrients.

Special dietary recommendations depending on the procedure

Depending on the type of aesthetic procedure, it may make sense for patients to adapt their diet. For example, it is advisable to avoid flatulent foods after abdominal surgery, while a diet rich in liquids and soft foods is preferable after facial surgery. We will be happy to advise you individually on this.

Long-term eating habits for lasting beautiful results

In order to maintain the results of the aesthetic procedure in the long term, it is advisable to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet that is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. With a nutrient-rich diet, patients also actively contribute to their well-being. The right diet is therefore an investment in your own health and beauty that pays off in the long term.
