Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. While traditional procedures using silicone or saline implants are already well established, the method of breast augmentation using autologous fat is becoming increasingly popular. This innovative method, also known as lipofilling of the breast, offers a natural alternative for women who want to have their breasts enlarged. By using the body's own fat, the enlarged breast feels natural as a result and also has a special aesthetic appeal. In today's blog article, we take a closer look at breast augmentation with autologous fat and our experiences with this procedure.
What is breast augmentation with autologous fat?
In breast augmentation with autologous fat, fat cells are harvested from other areas of the body - typically the abdomen, hips or thighs - processed and then injected into the breast. The procedure offers a double effect: a fuller décolleté and a slimmer silhouette where the fat was harvested. The result is convincing in a natural way: the breast is fuller but still feels natural as the patient's own body tissue is used.
Advantages of the process
- Natural look and feel: As the material used comes from the patient's own body, the breasts feel natural after augmentation and look very aesthetically pleasing in a natural way. In addition, the natural feel of the breasts is retained.
- Possibility of equalising asymmetry: Many women have breasts of different sizes for genetic reasons. Breast augmentation with autologous fat makes it possible to equalise asymmetries between the breasts.
- Lower risks and side effects: Compared to implants, there are no foreign body reactions and there is a significantly lower risk of complications overall, as only the body's own tissue is used.
- No scars and quick recovery: As the fat is transferred by injection, no incisions are required, which means that only minimal, barely visible scars remain. Healing is very gentle because the skin is only subjected to minimal stress.
- Additional body shaping effect: The removal of fat from other areas of the body leads to a slimmer figure and emphasises the body shape.
How long does breast augmentation with autologous fat last?
The results of breast augmentation with autologous fat are visible immediately after the procedure, but the final appearance only becomes apparent over time. This is due to the fact that some of the transferred fat tissue is naturally broken down by the body in the first few months. On average, around 60 to 80 per cent of the transferred fat remains in the breast permanently - i.e. for life. Full integration and the final result usually become apparent after around six months, as soon as the fatty tissue has completely grown in. It is important to note that significant weight fluctuations that occur during the lifetime after breast augmentation can affect the result, as the remaining fat cells in the breast can increase or decrease in size just like other fat cells in the body.
Breast augmentation with autologous fat - the result
With breast augmentation using autologous fat, the achievable volume increases are more natural and less pronounced than with traditional implants. Even though the internet often talks about an increase of half a cup to a whole cup size, breast augmentations of several cup sizes are also possible. Individual counselling is useful and necessary here. In some cases, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure in order to achieve the desired result. Unfortunately, we are not permitted to present before and after pictures of a breast augmentation with autologous fat in accordance with Section 11 (1) sentence 3 of the German Drug Advertising Act (HWG). However, we are happy to share our experiences via our Instagram, TikTok and Facebook channels.
What are the requirements for breast augmentation with autologous fat?
For a successful breast augmentation with autologous fat, it is important that sufficient fat is available in other parts of the body so that this fat can be harvested, processed and injected into the breast. Women with a very low body fat percentage may therefore be less suitable for this procedure. Ideally, the woman should be normal to slightly overweight. This roughly corresponds to a BMI of 20 to 30. Good physical health is also required to minimise the risk of complications and ensure optimal healing. The skin of the breast should have a certain elasticity to be able to absorb the transplanted fat. This ensures that the result looks natural. A detailed consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon should evaluate individual factors and ensure that the patient's personal goals and requirements are a good match for breast augmentation with autologous fat.
Experience
The feedback from patients who have opted for breast augmentation with autologous fat in our practice is consistently positive. Most of them particularly emphasise the natural feel and appearance of their breasts in the final result. Many women are also very pleased with the dual effect of the procedure: fat is removed from areas of the body where it is undesirable and used to improve the breast contour, which not only increases breast volume but often also has a positive effect on the overall body image. This has a positive effect not only on physical but also psychological well-being. Compared to patients who opt for breast augmentation using a traditional technique (e.g. silicone or saline implants), in our experience breast augmentation with autologous fat is often perceived as a less invasive procedure. In addition, experience has shown that recovery times are significantly faster compared to traditional breast augmentations, and many women decide to have a breast augmentation with their own fat as part of a mommy makeover after one or more pregnancies. We have already reported on the mommy makeover in our last blog article.
Conclusion
Breast augmentation with autologous fat is a promising option for women who want a moderate increase in breast size without having to resort to synthetic materials. However, as with any surgical procedure, it is important to seek advice and treatment from an experienced and qualified specialist in order to achieve the best results and minimise risks. We will be happy to advise you.
